Using Stair Edging to Finish the Van Floor

Materials needed for this project —>

  • A speed square for getting those 45-degree angles and your trusty pencil, of course.

  • Some screws (I bought this pack a while ago and have used it throughout lots of aspects of the build)

I’m here for ya.

Seriously! Reach out on Instagram or YouTube with questions.

The video can save you from reading too much.

Step 1:

Measure the areas you’ll be covering so you know how much stair edging to buy.

I knew that I wanted to cover the back, the sliding door area, and the space between the cab and the back of the van.

Step 2:

Measure and cut for each space.

When cutting, we wanted things to meet at a 45 degree angle, so we used our speed square to mark off 45 degree angles that would meet another complementary 45 degree angle.

If you start the cut with the tin snips (using the tips, ideally, so you don’t bend the stair edging like I did), then you can use the hacksaw to get the hard to reach last bit.

Step 3:

Secure the stair edging to the subfloor.

Using wood screws that wouldn’t penetrate my subfloor (1/2-inch plywood), we held the stair edging exactly where we wanted it and then screwed into each of the pre-existing holes.

Final thoughts:

I am very happy with the ease of install and look of the pewter colored aluminum stair edging for finishing off the floor.

BUT, if I could go back, I would buy larger stair edging (perhaps 1 1/2 inch x the same rather than 1/2 inch x half inch) in order to install the edging over the edge of the cocoa mats I later installed.

All in all though, I am happy with how it looks!
